Doug and Marlene went to visit friends in Amherst while Brenda and I headed back to PEI. We drove the Green Gables trail and the Red Shores trail which took us to some scenic spots throughout the centre of the island. A nice thing about PEI is that they have broken the island up into several different routes that you can follow, and each route is marked along the way with road signs so you know where to turn at the various intersections.

Our first major stop was the Cavendish National Park. The park activities are closed for the season, but it area is still accessible and there were a few people like us who took the time to enjoy the scenery. The park was hit hard by Hurricane Dorian, and a lot of trees were down. Before arriving we had watched a newscast showing how badly damaged the campground was and it was totally closed off. There is some concern that it may not open next year as early as planned. It was a nice time to stroll down the beach and enjoy the scenery without hordes of people.

We stopped at some quaint little towns and enjoyed the scenery at several view points.  We then headed to Charlottetown for a late lunch and continued on the Red Shores trail.  The beaches at Cavendish have brown sand beaches while the beaches on the south shore have red sand - both gorgeous.  From Charlottetown we saw inlets with sprawling beaches  (as the tide was out), secluded lighthouses and of course had to end our visit to PEI with some locally made ice cream from Cows Creamery.
